2023/ 2024 Program

The London Costume Design Experience provides young fashion design students and professionals with a week-long emersion into the world of Costume Design.

Attendees will be mentored by experienced costume designers from London's television, film, and theater industry.  The program offers hands-on experience and behind-the-scenes access where you'll learn practical skills that will prepare you for a career in costume design.

Deborah Cantor
Deborah Cantor
Costume Designer / Wardrobe Stylist

Deborah Cantor is a renowned London costume designer working in all genres of film, TV, theatre, and commercials with over 25 years experience. Her career began working for high profile glossy magazines British Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, before transitioning to the costume department at the BBC. Deborah has been lead costume designer for major networks such as Fox, ITV, Sky, Comedy Central and Amazon. Her body of work includes The Extraordinary Life of April Ashley (Channel 4), Liverpool Narcos (Sky), The Great British Sewing Bee (BBC 1), The Lateis7h Show (Channel 4), working with many of the biggest names in British entertainment, including Gordon Ramsay, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, Dame Shirley Bassey, Jodie Kidd, and Chris O'Dowd. Her expertise in costume design makes her an invaluable resource for those aspiring to work in the entertainment industry.

Richard Drew
Television Production Designer

Richard Drew has been working in Television Production Design for the past 36 years and has close to nearly 200 credits to his name. Starting out as an Art Dept Assistant in the late 1980’s, Richard is still very much in demand as a Production Designer and his career shows no sign of slowing down. Recent credits include This Time With Alan Partridge, Intelligence, Stath Let’s Flats, The Witchfinder, The Larkins , The Chelsea Detective and the hugely successful After Life, which to date has been seen by over 120 million people. Richard is currently Production Designing the new series of McDonald and Dodds for ITV and following that will be taking over the Design reigns on the new series of Mandy for the BBC.

Venetia Ercolani is an Award Winning Costume Designer - ROYAL TELEVISION SOCIETY AWARD for BBC STRICTLY DANCE FEVER in 2006. She has over 30 years of Costume Design, having started in the theatre and then as a staff designer at the BBC. Her work ranges from LA PASSIONE a Feature Film written by Chris Rea and starring Shirley Bassey.INQUISITION a 16th-century Drama starring DEREK JACOBI. Situation Comedy MULBERRY starring Geraldine McEwan to TV Series Gladiators 2008 to BBC1 Any Dream Will Do, Eastenders serial drama. Drama Series The Hello Girls for ITV and Red or Black for Syco TV.She has experienced an amazing Career, covering every genre of TV, very grateful.

Mentorship
Students will learn from industry professionals working in television, film, and theater production and meet with mentors in small group settings where they can ask questions directly and get career advice. 

Workshop
Participants will choose from television, film, or theater costume design projects and learn how to create a digital mood board to style characters. Mentors will outline criteria required to be awarded a certificate of completion that can be used for their portfolio and resume. 

 

Royal Tour

Our professional costume designer will assist throughout the day by educating the students on time periods, ideal accessories, and completing a luxury look for at least one character they've chosen in your digital mood board.

Kensington Palace

Explore the Crown To Couture exhibition, a remarkable showcase tracing the evolution of Royal fashion from the 18th century to the present with over 10.000 items. This tour offers insights into trends in Royal fashion design, the craftsmanship behind royal garments, and how contemporary designers incorporate historical elements into modern royal fashion interpretations.

  • Discover trends in Royal fashion design throughout history.
  • Learn about the fabrics used in the royal garments and their construction.
  • Get inspired by historical design elements you can incorporate into your characters.

Saville Row & Jermyn St Tour

Explore behind the scenes to meet the skilled tailors and cutters, and gain insights into the opulent textiles and techniques employed in creating bespoke suits that meet the exacting Royal standards. Discover the rich heritage of British tailoring, explore the significant contributions of women in this craft, and uncover the meticulous craftsmanship that has perfected this art to achieve Royal distinction.

  • Learn about the history of British tailoring and craftsmanship.
  • Talk with tailors who have perfected this art and achieved the Royal standard.
  • Get inspired by the fabrics and tailoring for at least one of your characters.

Established in 1806, Harrods is a world-renowned department store located in London. It holds several Royal Warrants and is known for its vast array of over 330 departments, making it one of the largest and most iconic shopping destinations globally. Attendees of the private tour will gain valuable insights into luxury craftsmanship, finding inspiration for costume and apparel design.

  • Analyze luxury trends from the world’s most iconic brands. 
  • Observe how trends of the past impact modern apparel design. 
  • Find inspiration for character accessories from luxury brands.

The Chanel Exhibit

The Chanel Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum is the first UK exhibition dedicated to Chanel. The exhibition will showcase the establishment of the House of Chanel, her professional career, the evolution of her iconic design style and her contribution to the history of fashion. Featuring over 180 looks, including jewelry, accessories, cosmetics, and perfumes.

  • Learn how the Chanel style evolved from 1910 to the present.
  • Get inspiration from multiple decades for modern character development.
  • Put together a look for a Chanel inspired character.

Vintage Inspiration

Visit the famous Notting Hill and Brick Lane neighborhoods to discover a diverse range of unique fashion pieces from eras past, fueling creativity and providing inspiration for apparel, accessory, and costume designs.

  • Learn how to identify the period of vintage clothes and accessories. 
  • Learn upcycling techniques to repurpose and transform clothing.
  • Match multiple vintage pieces to create a character’s costume.

Our professional costume designer will assist throughout the day by educating the students on time periods, ideal accessories, and completing a theater costume look for at least one character they've chosen in your digital mood board.

Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House is a British Opera Company famous for world-renowned opera and ballet productions. Attendees will experience an exclusive tour to learn about costume and set design  while peaking into the fascinating world of craftspeople who create the stunning costumes, scenery, and sets for the Royal Opera House.

  • Learn about costume design in the context of opera and ballet productions.
  • Discover how costume designers impact set design in productions.
  • Explore lighting techniques to enhance stage and costumes.

National Theater

Delve into the fascinating world of theater production with a behind-the-scenes tour of London's National Theater.  You'll gain insight into the crucial role of costume design in bringing theatrical masterpieces to life.

  • Learn about innovative costume design techniques used in productions.
  • Discover how costume and props work together to bring productions to life on stage.
  • Gain insight into sustainable theatre design principles to reduce waste in productions.

Live Theatre: Moulin Rouge

We will explore the West End, a shopping and entertainment destination where street style and theater merge. We will end the day attending the award-winning musical production of Moulin Rouge at the world-famous Piccadilly Theater, where what we learned at our Theater Tours will influence how we experience the play live and provide inspiration for our theater character.

  • Analyze key character costume themes in the musical. 
  • Identify the color palettes of the costumes that influence the atmosphere of the production. 
  • Observe how the hats, shoes, jewelry, and props complete the characters’ looks.

Angels Costumes is a historic costume design company known for creating and supplying costumes for the most iconic films, TV shows, and stage productions in history, such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Bridgerton, Barbie, and the Little Mermaid.

We will go behind-the scenes of the largest collection of quality costumes and accessories anywhere in the world. With over 1,000,000 pieces in their London headquarters, Angel’s costume design experts will take us through the process of selecting, tailoring, and altering costumes for productions.

  • How Angel's work with the world’s biggest studios to create characters for films, television, and theater. 
  • Get hands on with fabrics, materials, and accessories used in costuming.
  • Learn how to present your character mood board to a director for a television, film, or theater production.

Sample Schedule

Day 1
Arrivals - Meet & Greet

Attendees should arrive in time for an evening meet and greet session. We will introduce guides and fellow attendees, while also receiving an introduction to the tour itinerary, logistics, and setting the stage for an exciting adventure ahead.

Day 2 - Seminar And Workshop

Students will meet industry professionals who will share their knowledge of working show production, makeup, hair design, and wardrobe costuming. Attendees will meet with mentors in small group settings where they can ask questions directly and get career advice.

Workshop: How To Create A Mood Board For Your Characters

They will review scripts from television, film, and theater and choose a character from each production to style during our week of educational tours.

Television: The Crown (the life of Queen Elizabeth) Film: Rocketman (the life of Sir Elton John) Theater: Moulin Rouge (both a film and theater production)

Throughout the week students will take photos of wardrobe inspiration, architectural impressions, street scenes and create the look for each character on a digital mood board to present on our final day.

Architectural Tour

They will ride a Double Decker bus and tour key London neighborhoods to understand how architecture of a period informs character wardrobe development.

Day 3 -Royal Inspiration
Crown To Couture @ Kensington Palace

Students will Attend The Crown To Couture exhibition showcasing the evolution of royal fashion from the 18th century to the present day. They will learn about historical fashion design, costume conservation and contemporary design.

Savile Row & Jermyn Street Tour

This tour unveils the great history of British tailoring. Students will explore iconic Royal tailoring houses, where we will meet tailors, cutters, and learn about the luxury textiles used for the construction of bespoke suits and men’s and women’s tailoring that meet the Royal standard.

Harrods

Students will tour the iconic Harrods of London to experience the trends from the world’s most luxurious fashion brands finding inspiration for our costume designs.

Day 4 - Vintage Inspiration
Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto @ The Victoria And Albert Museum

Students will attend the Gabrielle Chanel exhibition that features over 50 of her most influential designs to learn about the fashion icon’s legacy and her impact on the fashion industry.

Vintage Shopping In Notting Hill And Brick Lane

Students will immerse ourselves in unique fashion pieces from eras past at the world’s most famous vintage shopping areas. They will fuel our creativity and inspiration for apparel and accessory design to gain a deeper appreciation for the art of costume design.

Day 5 - Theater Inspiration
National Theatre Costume Tour

Students will visit the National Theatre where we will get an in-depth look at theater production, prop design, and the role of costume design in some of the most iconic productions in history.

Royal Opera House Tour

The Royal Opera House is known for its world-class opera and ballet productions and stunning architecture. Stuents will learn how they use costume and stage design to tell the story through the art of opera and ballet.

West End Theatre Musical - Moulin Rouge

Students will end the day attending the award-winning musical production where what we learned during the day will influence how we experience the play live and find inspiration for our theater character.

Day 6 - Costume House Tour & Workshop

We will have a behind-the scenes tour of the largest collection of quality costumes and accessories anywhere in the world. With over 1,000,000 costume pieces in their London headquarters, Angel’s costume design experts will take us through the process of selecting, tailoring, and altering costumes for productions.

Workshop

We will pull together everything we’ve learned from the week and get guidance from professional costume designers on how to pull together the looks to present to a director for a television, film, or theater production.

We will end the day attending the award-winning musical production where what we learned during the day will influence how we experience the play live and find inspiration for our theater character.

Day 7 - Final Presentation
Goldhawk Road Fabric Shops

To complete our final looks, we will tour London’s famous fabric shops of Goldhawk Road to get swatches for our final character fabrics.

Presentation Prep

Students will have the afternoon to put the final touches on their presentations.

Program Grand Finale & Dinner

Students will present their digital mood boards, explain their character development, and get feedback from our mentors. Students who complete the program successfully will be presented with their London Costume Design Certificate of Completion at formal dinner.
